Whitechapel Occult Society uses a classless d20 system that helps players to shape their characters freely, fostering diverse and personalised character creation. With a focus on deadly gameplay, every decision carries weight and weapons and equipment play a crucial role. Gameplay revolves around a scene-based system where the Game Master designates scene difficulty, and players must meet or exceed this threshold to succeed in tests and challenges. The game uses the familiar mechanics of turns and rounds, with each turn allowing for movement and actions, while rounds are where the initiative order completes a full rotation. Combat and other actions are resolved through tests, with familiar advantage and disadvantage mechanics in the mix.

Character actions are governed by a set of rules encompassing movement, drawing weapons, attacking, and managing resources like ammunition. Critical hits allow you to add special abilities from weapons, while cover and armour negate damage. Beyond combat, the game provides a variety of challenges, including social dilemmas and puzzles, making for a well-rounded and engaging experience.

Whitechapel Occult Society offers a captivating tabletop role-playing experience that combines immersive storytelling with strategic gameplay mechanics. With its focus on character development, player agency, and dynamic challenges, the game promises an unforgettable but perilous journey through the occult underbelly of Victorian London.

System: Dynamic Pool System

The Dynamic Pool System (DPS) uses standard six-sided dice to create a dynamic pool for each character, which they spend to perform various actions like running, fighting, or studying.

Characters use these dice by either rolling or simply removing them from their pool, which refills at the start of each turn or narrative scene. Damage taken reduces the dice pool size, but characters can restore it at the cost of a lasting injury.

“Doom has come to Arkham and you and your friends are all that stands in the way of an ancient horror--so load your tommy gun, grab a book of occult magic, and use your guts, guile, and investigative skills to save the world!”

Arkham Horror The Roleplaying Game, offers a new way to confront the cosmic horrors lurking in Lovecraft's fictional town of Arkham, central to many Cthulhu Mythos stories. Unlike the popular Arkham Horror Living Card Game (LCG) mechanics, this game embraces traditional tabletop roleplaying. With its Starter Set launching in early August 2024, players will find themselves battling the eldritch horrors concealed in this box.

Arkham Horror The Roleplaying Game, published by Asmodee and designed by Edge Studio, offers an alternative to the already popular Call of Cthulhu RPG. While both explore the Cthulhu Mythos, mysteries and cosmic horrors, this new rendition aims to attract players more accustomed to character sheets than the card decks from the Arkham Horror LCG.

With support for two to six players and a Game Master, the game utilises the new Dynamic Pool System (DPS), a dice-based mechanic designed for accessibility without sacrificing strategic depth. Although not entirely revolutionary, it promises an engaging experience for newcomers to the genre and tabletop RPGs alike.
